The Wikimedia Movement has set itself the following strategic direction: By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us. To bring this vision to life, thousands of volunteers and many regional and thematic organizations are working together to promote free knowledge worldwide. The Wikimedia movement is the totality of people and organizations which revolve around Wikimedia sites and projects, with Wikipedia being the most known.

Wikimedia Deutschland is the second largest Wikimedia Organization within the Movement. Aside from our volunteer support work, we also develop and maintain free software and the free Wikidata database. The organization is involved in digital and educational policy to create a framework that enables free access to knowledge and data, and to educate the general public about the value of free knowledge. To do so, we also cooperate with cultural institutions to make more cultural heritage freely accessible. Additionally, we take responsibility on the global level for ensuring that a democratically organized Wikimedia Movement develops in a fair and sustainable manner.
