Recommendations for international civil society organisations (ICSOs) to strengthen adaptive and collaborative capacity on the rise of China

During 2019, the Centre’s Scanning the Horizon futures platform has been exploring how international civil society organisations (ICSOs) can better position themselves to understand and adapt to the rise of global China.
This has been identified as one of the top global trends influencing the trajectory and development of other major global trends. It is also a huge topic with high levels of unpredictability, and individual ICSOs have limited resources to dedicate to fully scoping out this trend and its implications for their work around the world.
We have therefore carried this out as a collaborative effort throughout 2019, with the aim of documenting our findings as a ‘Quick Guide’ of practical entry points for senior ICSO leaders, to introduce and summarise the key themes and implications for our sector. This will provide accessible strategic guidance for ICSOs on how to think through their current strategies and capacities, and further develop future engagement and adaptation approaches to be better prepared for this major trend.
In two webinars, Bertram Lang, Research Associate at Goethe University, Frankfurt, and author of our sector guidance on “Strengthening ICSO adaptive and collaborative capacity on the rise of China”, will present the key summary recommendations for ICSOs.
This second webinar will focus on presenting strategic pointers: trends and future perspectives for ICSOs under four key themes:
- Monitoring Chinese Development Finance along the “Belt and Road”
- Preparing for Transformative Technologies with Significant Chinese Innovation and Investment Capacity
- Building Transnational Partnerships with Chinese Social Organisations
- Adapting to China’s Growing Influence on Global Governance and the UN System to be better prepared and able to adapt to the rise of global China.
(The first webinar, available on youtube, focused on the overall cross-cutting strategy recommendations for individual ICSOs to strengthen their organisational capacity, and for strengthening sector collaborative capacity).
