With money being the pink elephant in each power shift discussion room we are excited to focus this year’s Power Shift Governance Lab on the question of “How do we make resource distribution and accountability within International Civil Society Organisations (ICSs) more equitable? Together with Lab participants – ICSO representatives and partners – as well as subject matter experts will we dive into this crucial topic. And after three years of online labs we are excited to be offering this year’s lab in person again, exploiting that opportunity to test new discussion formats.

Background

Since 2018, the Centre’s Power Shift Labs have brought together senior representatives of ICSOS and their governing bodies to explore and learn from each other how governance changes can address the problem of power imbalances – between Northern and Southern, but also between large and small, rich and resource-scarce entities of ICSOs as well as their partners. Increasingly the emphasis has been put on partner relations and inclusion of the communities they serve. Many participating organisations have advanced on their ambitions in putting the people they serve at the centre of their governance. Most have identified paths to success but also encountered hurdles and blockages. Through the use of systematic tools and peer exchange, the Lab cohort progressed.

This work is based on the notion for continuous improvement of relevance and legitimacy of ICSOs’ work and setup, challenged internally and externally, and standing in the way of these organisations to achieve their mandates.
