Recognising the growing challenge of digital threats and cyberattacks that ICSOs and CSOs face, the ICSCentre has partnered with the CyberPeace Institute and expanded the Solidarity Playbook – a collection of case studies and best practices curated by the Solidarity Action Network (SANE) – to feature four new case studies on cybersecurity and share experience how (I)CSOs dealt with concrete cyberattacks. In this collection we feature a phishing attack that hijacked an organisation’s social media account; a spear phishing attack that targeted employees’ email accounts over six weeks; a ‘brute-force’ attack with a high volume of attempted logins; and a ransomware attack where attackers exploited a vulnerability in a server and held an organisation’s data hostage.

With this collection we aim to make experience, strategies and lessons learned available for other organisations, who have faced or might face similar attacks and challenges in the future. By sharing and exchanging on this topic, organisations can improve how they prepare and respond to cyberattacks. As cybersecurity is essential across all departments and needs to be a shared responsibility, the case studies are written in a straightforward way using plain language and providing explanations for technical terms.

At the launch event on 22 March, we will spotlight a case study from the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and hear from Maria Barbara Leon (Chief Operating Officer at the UICC) about her organisation’s experience of and lessons from a cyberattack in which hackers took control of their social media account and demanded a ransom to give it back. The case study authors, Nonso Jideofor and Sacha Robehmed, will further share key observations, challenges, and lessons learned from the overall collection. The launch event, much like the case studies themselves, is aimed at anyone working in civil society who is keen to learn more about cyber threats increasingly targeting the sector and what we can do about them. The presentation parts will be alternated with Q&A sessions for you to ask questions, seek advice, and share your own experience.  Â
