In the wake of shifting global power dynamics and changing geopolitical tensions, we are witnessing the alignment of powerful tech companies with political objectives. Hence, the digital space is increasingly shaped by factors beyond technology itself. From internet governance to data protection, disruptive political trends are influencing digital infrastructure, policies, and access to information more than ever. Not only states and the global economy are entangled within those competing interests. Given that the implications on human, social and digital rights, civic tech, and the movements for global social and climate justice are profound, how can civil society organizations (CSOs) react and navigate this New Digital Normal?

This Digital Dialogue will examine how emerging geopolitical shifts—such as the rise of digital authoritarianism, regional data sovereignty, and the fragmentation of the internet—are affecting the global digital landscape. The discussion will explore:

  1. New Digital Divides: How geopolitical tensions between nations are influencing global access to the internet, the regulation of online spaces, and the availability of digital services.

  2. Digital Authoritarianism: The rise of digital authoritarian policies and their impact on freedom of expression, privacy, and civic engagement, particularly in repressive regimes.

  3. Opportunities for Civil Society: How can civil society organizations adapt to these shifting geopolitical realities? What strategies can be employed to navigate these challenges, while advocating for digital rights and greater access to technology?

The Digital Dialogue event series is jointly organised since 2022 by Civic Tech Africa (CTIN) in Johannesburg and the International Civil Society Centre in Berlin.

The recording will be available soon!
