Background:
Building on the insights from our previous Digital Dialogue on the impact of shifting geopolitics on the digital space, this discussion took a deeper dive into one of the most pressing consequences: the financial sustainability of digital initiatives, particularly those led by civil society organisations (CSOs), UN agencies, and international institutions.
One of the first strategic moves in the alliance between right-wing political forces and Big Tech has been the financial strangulation of digital rights organisations and independent digital initiatives. This tactic has led to funding restrictions, financial blacklisting, and corporate consolidation, affecting the ability of digital advocacy groups to operate effectively.
As the geopolitical battle over digital governance intensifies, so does the need for alternative sustainable funding models that ensure financial independence, resilience, and long-term impact.
