A decade ago, at a time when the digitalization of our societies had already advanced, innovative ideas were put forward how technology could be used to foster participation and democracy. The experiments at the time with the concept of “Liquid Democracy” serve as good examples for that time.
However, the technological landscape is transforming at lightning speed and recent new developments, such as generative artificial intelligence, have hit the headlines. Assuming that democracy and social justice are the fabric of our societies (rather than, let’s say, oppression and exploitation) questions arise on the societal impact of these technologies. What are the new challenges and opportunities in view of the arrival of AI? Especially civil society organizations advocating and engaging for social justice are asking themselves on how best they should be leveraging AI and emerging technologies for social impact and civic engagement. Is the disruption of liberal democracy, it’s principles and processes as we know them, around the corner?
Given the broad scope of the topic, we would like the panelists to put special emphasis on the impact AI may have for minority and marginal social groups: What are the risks lurking on the horizon or, thinking positively, what could be opportunities the opportunities for civil society organizations to promote democratic rights and social justice for those groups?
